Santa Clara County
$2 million
given to kids' insurance program
The David and Lucile Packard Foundation will give nearly $2 million
to Santa Clara County's Healthy Kids program, providing welcome
cash to the low-cost insurance plan for children.
Since January, the program has offered health insurance to
uninsured children whose families earn up to 300 percent of the
federal poverty level -- too much to qualify for government help, but
too little
to afford private insurance. The program has enrolled 7,500
children,
more than expected, and takes in 500 new applications
monthly.
"We're just extremely thankful and gratified,'' said Craig
Walsh,
executive director of Santa Clara Family Health Foundation,
which
administers Healthy Kids. "This grant will allow us to
enroll a lot
more kids and continue other fundraising activities.''
